What is PED 150?

MPM PED 150 pedestrian segregation barrier Clarity VM

PED 150 is a pedestrian segregation barrier used to protect pedestrians, including operators and visitors, from nearby forklift trucks.

It has an impact resistance of 18.174 Kj, meaning it can absorb the impact of a 5-tonne forklift truck traveling at 6 MPH, assuming the forklift hits the barrier rails at 45 degrees. In simple terms, it is strong enough to segregate most forklifts from pedestrians in most warehouses. It has a footprint of just 180 mm wide, meaning it occupies the smallest footprint for this level of impact resistance.

PED 150 has been engineered to have flat-faced rails. This means that when a pallet or forks strike against the rails, the chances of the pallet or forks riding over or under the rails are greatly diminished, further protecting the pedestrian. This barrier system is fully modular and can be redeployed to different areas of your site if your warehouse layout changes.

What are the advantages of using PED 150?

  • Good impact resistance as well as scratch resistance. An impact resistance of 18.174 Kj is strong enough to safely protect pedestrians from most FLT traffic, as seen in most food and beverage factories.

Pedestrian Barrier External

PED150 is the best all-round medium duty pedestrian segregation barrier

  • Durability – Made from a material similar to that of many household security doors and windows, these barriers are designed to stand the test of time and can be used externally.
  • High flexibility – As with all of the MPM range of barriers, PED 150 offers high flexibility to absorb impacts.
  • V0 Fire Resistant – PED 150 is classified as V0 fire resistant, making them a safer alternative to barriers not classified as V0 fire resistant. See International UL94 standard.
  • Excellent non-fading properties – Highly resistant to degradation when exposed to UV.
  • Easy to clean – It has a non-permeable surface, so you can easily wipe off any dirt or grime and keep the sealant clean.
  • Anti-Scratch material – Prevents scuffs and scratches from daily use.
  • 100% recyclable – PED 150 can be fully recycled in widely available recycling centers.
  • Floor space occupation – PED 150 has a footprint of just 180mm, one of the smallest footprint flexible barriers suitable for up to 5 Tonne FLTs.
  • Cost – PED 150 has a relatively low cost per meter compared to other similar systems.
  • Flat Faced rails – Designed to prevent pallets and forks from being deflected up or down, as seen with round rails.
  • Modular design – This barrier system can be lengthened, shortened, and redeployed to different configurations on site without specialist equipment. See how to install MPM barrier Video guide.
  • Bright yellow design – Yellow is often used to designate aisleways and traffic lanes. By using yellow barriers, employers can ensure that walkways in the workplace remain clear and unobstructed. Clear walkways are essential for maintaining a safe working environment, preventing accidents, and increasing efficiency in the movement of employees and materials.

What are the disadvantages of using PED 150?

  • It isn't our strongest option – 18.175 Kj is robust, but it still isn't our strongest pedestrian segregation barrier. So if you need a very high impact-resistant barrier for forklifts and other machinery over 5 tonnes or at speeds higher than 10 km/h, MPM PED 150 won’t be a suitable fit for you.
  • It is bright yellow – If you are accustomed to orange, the bright yellow color may make your orange barriers look outdated.
  • PED 150 is not the cheapest barrier – If you are looking for the lowest-cost barrier, there are more affordable products available.
  • No low-level base rail – Some barriers offer a low-level base rail; PED 150 isn't one of them. While it won’t increase the risk of low-level fork/pallet penetration, it also won’t help prevent the threat either.
  • Some barriers have a low-level base rail to prevent forks from passing through.

Where can you use PED 150?

Because MPM PED 150 is suitable for such a wide variety of segregation applications, it is difficult to specify where you can use it. It is appropriate for any pedestrian segregation situation as long as it doesn’t require very high impact resistance or a low-level base rail.

MPM PED 150 can be used externally

However, we can give some examples of where our customers use PED 150, to help you determine whether you could use it too.

  •  Food & Beverage

What are the gate options for PED150?

If you have identified PED 150 as a suitable option for you but are now wondering about the best gate choices, there are several options available. The most common type of gate is the DP150 Gate, which can be supplied as a single one-way gate, a single two-way (swing) gate, or a swing double gate. The type of gate you choose should be the one best suited to your application. Typically, most factories opt for a single one-way gate that opens inwards as per PAS 13 directions.

The innovative technical design of the safety gates allows for quick and simple installation, thanks to reliable hinges that are guaranteed to provide flawless long-term use.

DP 150 SAFE WAY

Pedestrian crossings in high-traffic areas can pose a very dangerous situation. It is precisely to address this issue that at Clarity, we have started supplying products developed by MPM such as the Door Pedestrian 150 Safe Way, our innovative pedestrian crossing gate equipped with a sensor and automatic closure.

The Safe Way system is highly intuitive and equally effective. Thanks to the adjustable wall-mounted sensor, our DP 150 Safe Way can detect approaching vehicular traffic and, in the presence of a detected danger, automatically close the gate until the vehicle is stationary or moves away from the door. The DP 150 Safe Way is equipped with a practical light signal that indicates the closing status of the door: the green light signals that the gate is unlocked, while the red light indicates the mechanical lock and therefore the presence of an approaching vehicle.

In the event that a dangerous vehicle is detected, the sensor will be able to recognize it. In such a situation, the electric lock will automatically block, preventing the gate from opening until the vehicle is no longer a threat. The sensor, highly advanced and sensitive, can distinguish between pedestrians and vehicles to avoid unintentional closures.

The Safe Way sensor is adjustable at will to allow the detection of vehicular traffic in desired areas and is directly connected to the electrical system of your warehouse.

What tests and certifications does PED 150 have?

One of the questions we often get asked is - what tests and certifications does PED 150 have - there are many different tests used on these barriers, the main ones are as follows.

  • Impact resistance tests using pendulum swing test and Sled test as recommended by PAS 13
  • EN 13501 Reaction to fire test - V0 Fire Resistant.
  • PAS 13 - While PAS 13 is not a standard, the MPM range of barriers are tested to these recommendations
  • EN15512 - External test verification by TUV NORD
  • UNI Partners - Thanks to the more than 200 crash-tests that we carry out every month and through international certification bodies, we guarantee excellent performance in terms of impact resistance and durability of our safety solutions.

Our test area and analysis method follow the indications dictated by the UNI/TR 11886-1 technical specification, which makes them updated to the most excellent, reliable and inclusive of European quality standards.

How much does PED 150 cost?

As with a standard pedestrian barrier, the cost of a heavy duty pedestrian barrier is determined by 3 things - the number of gates/corners, the delivery, and the installation costs.

A typical heavy duty pedestrian barrier will cost you between £190-250/ metre depending on the number of gates, corner etc.

A straight run of 30 metres of heavy duty pedestrian barrier will cost around £5800.

Is MPM PED 150 a good barrier for you?

The answer to this will obviously depend on your application and specific requirements. If you are looking for a versatile barrier which can cope with the majority of FLT traffic would be a good option for you.

However, if you want a stronger barrier or a lower cost option, you may want to look at alternative options. You can find Flexible pedestrian safety barriers which have higher strength if that is what you are looking for.

Or, you can explore the possibility of getting a lower cost by looking into the use of steel barriers.
